Shovel Guitars & Musical Tea Towels

You never know what you might find at Christchurch’s Riccarton Sunday Market.

A tea towel with an outline of Morrissey's glum face is framed by the words “To dry by your side is such a heavenly way to dry”. It is hung behind a box of collectable 45-inch records and a shovel that has been transformed into a guitar.

On a recent warm Sunday afternoon, Paul Allen adjusted the tea towels in his new Rolling Retro Mobile Market van.

Allen was involved in high-end rockabilly and retro markets around Australia, and for 30 years he and his wife, accomplished artist Jo, travelled annually to attend the Riccarton market. They moved to North Canterbury's Leithfield Beach permanently 18 months ago, and now Allen is a stallholder too.

‘’Only two people in the world make the shovel guitar,’’ Allen said

            .

"One of them is my mate, Adam Harrison. He runs in the Blue Mountains and ships them over here. He makes cigar box ones, too.''

Obligingly, Allen plugged the shovel in and The rock ‘n roll-themed tea-towels were the last lot made under the Plum Jam label in New Zealand, he said. Behind him, one reads “Never Mind the Dishes”.

It's Allen’s first time as a stallholder at Riccarton. With an eye for rare records, toys and retro goods, he and his van will be at the Revamp Vintage Market on August 30 at the Wigram Air Force Museum, the Christchurch Art Gallery monthly Wednesday night market and, later this year, Rangiora Muscle Car Madness.

Paul Allen, of Rolling Retro Mobile Market, sells rare and collectable records, vintage toys and ''odd and different items'', including guitars made from cigar boxes and shovels.

Riccarton Rotary spokesman Craig Murphy said the Sunday market was one of the longest-running in New Zealand and had '’helped a lot of people’’.

''It's been going for 31 years,'' he said.

''It's a charity market so everything we earn goes to charity. Rotary doesn't charge entry or for parking. We have raised $3.7 million dollars over the 31 years, which goes back into the Christchurch community, from the Salvation Army to the City Mission, St John, 0800 Hungry, Hohepa House, school sports, Outward Bound, you name it.''

Riccarton Sunday Market manager Sue Rowe said the market had been on its present site behind Riccarton Racecourse for 20 years.

‘'One woman who is 80 now, she never misses a Sunday. She's an artisan selling hand cream – she's been with the market for 30 years,'' Rowe said. It attracted an average of 6000 people each Sunday in winter and ‘’more than 10,000’’ in summer. The market started as a car boot sale at Riccarton Mall when there was no Sunday trading.

Paul Allen, of Rolling Retro Mobile Market, is just one of many stallholders at the popular Riccarton Sunday Market. He sells rare and collectable records, vintage toys and ''odd and different items'' include guitars made from cigar boxes and shovels.

‘’After that it moved to Bush Inn, then Riccarton High School, then the university and then it came here,'' Murphy said.

''Some people would look at some of our stalls and think ‘junk’, yet for other people that is exactly why they come, the secondhand tools and goods. It has a far broader audience than a farmers or craft market.''

Some people had been ''confused'' and thought the market had closed because of the construction of the neighbouring Ngāi Tahu Karamū subdivision, he said.

In more than three decades, it had closed only ‘’a handful of times’’.

A great day was had by all on the 28th October with car displays by the Mustang Car Club and the Harley Davidson Bike Club.

Local entertainment on stage included the Te Kotahitanga Kapahaka Group, the Takumi Japanese Drumming Group and the Caledonian School Pipe Band to name a few.

The Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel had the honour of cutting the Birthday cake with Ross Binning (then Chairman of the Market Operations Committee) and Eduardo from the Rotary Club of Riccarton. As the Mayor said, the past, present and future of the market cutting the cake. Tim Mills from the Canterbury Jockey Club also spoke and acknowledged the time that The Riccarton Market has been a part of the scene at the Riccarton Racecourse.

Over the last 30 years, the Rotary Club of Riccarton has given back to the Community (both here in Christchurch and Internationally) over $3,000,000 as a direct result of surpluses raised through The Riccarton Market. Not bad for a project that started out from a few Rotarians with their secondhand goods off a trailer all those years ago!

Got Wood?

Noel can be found at his stall at the Riccarton Market every Sunday!

It was a utilitarian craft favoured by the ancient Egyptians and now, thanks to master crafters like Noel Graham, you can still own a piece of handcrafted, wood-turned art today for your pad.

Noel, who can be found at his stall at the Riccarton Market every Sunday selling his wooden wares and clothing, turned what was a hobby into a living after retiring from teaching. Not that he’s turned his back on teaching altogether, Noel is doing his bit to ensure this age-old craft doesn’t disappear by co-writing a Certificate in Woodturning course for Aoraki Polytechnic in 2005 (now administered by the National Association of Woodworkers) and continues to teach modules for the Christchurch and North Canterbury Woodcraft Club.

Collecting and milling the majority of the timbers in his work, Noel also enhances his wares – which range from elegant hollow vessels, finely turned ornaments and multi-axis works – with acrylic paint and patinas. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, he’ll happily take commissions.

Henrietta Rutherford-Jones has some serious experience in researching and creating natural skin care products. Her Country Creams range would never stoop to include any artificial nasties (such as parabens, preservatives, boric acid, fragrances, or a host of other chemical baddies); instead they incorporate natural and botanical ingredients such as Manuka honey, jasmine, lavender, citrus, and many other plant oils. Much of Henrietta’s knowledge of these botanicals is drawn from her mother’s rich Tongan/European background and her own frequent travels to India, which she travelled to for years as a volunteer for Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.
